This exemplary program has been a part of the core curriculum here at the Meeting Street Academy in Charleston South, Carolina. We are a Pre-K – 5th grade school. The impact of the program has been an extreme phenomenon and has resulted in a change in many of the students overall growth. The positive outcome and effectiveness of the program has been especially effective in the area of social and emotional development in ours students which has contributed to their academic success.

The program has had an outstanding impact on the lives of our students. It provides performing arts enrichment, social skills development and also motivates the students academically. This is very important to our students who are African American youth from the 38109 zip code here in Memphis. In addition, the historical/cultural based curriculum has greatly improved both the self- esteem and self-image of our students. Mr. O’Conner’s creative instructional methodology and compassionate spirit for obtaining student success has resulted in a win-win situation. The staff, students and parents are excited about this partnership.

As a member of the Shelby County Schools school board I approached Mr. O’Conner regarding the Watoto Program’s involvement with the I-Zone schools. Since 2012 the program has positively engaged Frayser area youth of Memphis TN in an outstanding performing arts enrichment program that has had a positive impact on their lives. The program not only provided performing arts enrichment but it also helped to motivate the students academically. The double digit gains in student performance can be greatly contributed to their involvement with the program under the leadership of Mr. O’Conner.
